In the 1930's, The Daily Mail famously ran the headline 'Hurrah for the Blackshirts!' and ran a series of articles promoting the British Union of Fascists, describing fascism as 'sound common sense' (not to mention describing the Hitler Youth as 'sturdy young lads'. It also serialised the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and ran articles inciting hatred against Jews.

Since then, however, it has drifted inexorably to the right.

Whilst this appeals to a certain sector of the public who also hate blacks, gays, immigrants, foreigners in general, single parents, anyone on benefits, people whose skin is slightly darker than Richard Littlejohn's pasty deadfish flab, liberals, libertarians, etc etc, there are others who find its xenophobic, racist, homophobic, hysterical trivia-mongering, hatred-inciting, reductionist, knowing promotion of pseudoscience, religious intolerance, and mixture of misinformation and outright lies to further its own agenda offensive and irresponsible.

The fact that the Daily Mail claims to represent the views of Middle England, and has the gall to to set itself up as somehow morally superior than the rest of the trash tabloids means that it appeals to middle class bigots who are too thick to understand the Telegraph but don't want to be seen reading the Express.

The founder of the Daily Mail, Lord Northcliffe, said his winning formula was to give his readers "a daily hate". In this it has succeeded.

That's the condensed nutshell version. Buy me a pint and I will happily rant for hours on the subject.

I forgot to mention the Daily Heil's obsession with property prices, prompting the Private Eye spoof headline "Influx of asylum seekers cause house values to plummet and Property prices fall as asteroid prepares to wipe out life on Earth."

Rather than having to glance at the DM headlines in a shop you can however generate your own here with the Daily Mail-o-matic:

A rather naive friend of mine wanted to submit an idea for an article to the Daily Mail. I advised her not to, but she did not accept the advice. A few weeks later it was published under the name of one of their journalists. So the paper stoops to theiving ideas.
