Re: whats on the menu
Tonight I'm planning Indonesian kari sayur. Seems the perfect recipe for this year, you can throw in bits and bobs of vegetables that you have to hand - and with this year's vegetable yield I mostly only have bits and bobs of vegetables, Potato, carrot, mangetout, green beans, calabrese and shredded cabbage probably. And of course home grown chilli and coriander. Easy, one pot dish (ok, 2 if you want rice with it) - just chuck the veg in in order of time needed to cook so that they are all done at the same time. And you can get your 5-a-day all in one meal !

Mr D wants to know what raccoon tastes like. There's a joke over here that all unusual meat (snails and so on) tastes like chicken. Does raccoon taste like chicken????

I was going to ask for the recipe, but when I did the 'quote' thingy, found that there was already a link to one you posted last year. The colour change for the link is a bit too subtle - anyway it sounds gooood. Got dinner sorted for tonight, but will probably try it soon.

Re: whats on the menu
Made 4 steak pies today & cooked a bag of chicken fillets.
That means 3 pies in the freezer & 3 lots of chicken for salad etc.
I am so much happier now I have plenty of pre cooked stored away. I must admit what I had in the freezer was a godsend when I was so ill.
of course it also saves on the gas as well.

How do you do that? Every time I batch cook its just easier to bung it in the fridge and eat the same thing for two or three days.

Re: whats on the menu
Well OH gets fed up with the same meals day after day. Also it is easier to eat less this way, as each meal is cooked in seperate dishes, so there is no second helpings.
Mainly it means I get days off cooking if I have a lot to do or horsepiddle appointments. It also saves on gas which has made a difference to our bills.

Re: whats on the menu
Before we married, I was studying 4 nights a week and would cook a large bean stew on Sunday which I heated up for the rest of the week. When I got married, I discovered that Mr JG didn't mind eating the same thing 2 days running, but that was IT!

Re: whats on the menu
I'm with Pol on this one! I've been a 'batch cooker' all my life - it's like having money in a piggy bank. Something put by for a rainy day. And usually, the preparation is only a little longer than making a single meal. Added to that, I have always worked out my menus for the week. It helps with the budgeting, as it is only necessary to buy what is on the list. But for me, the greatest advantage is just knowing what we are going to be eating, without having to rack my brains half an hour before dinner time. If for some reason, it isn't feasible to have what was preplanned, well there are always some other prepared meals in the freezer. Or the chippy down the road!

Todays offerings
4 meat pies, 3 to freeze & 10 jam or lemon curd tarts.
My freezer is begining to give a nice range of ready meals. Can start to think of doing other things instead of cooking.

Re: whats on the menu
Trying a squash bake tonight - I used a large patty pan squash which I had allowed to grow too big to be used whole. Peeled it, scooped out the middle then sliced. Cooked in salted water for three minutes, then layered with some bolognaise sauce I just happened to have, finishing with a layer of squash then grated cheese. I'm baking it at mk 6 for twenty five minutes or so, covered. Hope it works!

Re: whats on the menu
went to a couple of good restaurants in Bath for lunch and more lunch. Didn't think I would want any supper, but the smell of the pigeon casserole in the slow cooker made me realise the error in my thinking.

Just teh idea of pigeon casserole is enough to make anyone hungry never mind the actual smell of it!
