How big is a ton of compost?

default How big is a ton of compost?

Post by Wilhelm Von Rhomboid on 11th January 2011, 1:27 pm

How big is a ton of compost, roughly?

We have been enquiring of our council recycling service and they sell recycled organic compost at £2.50 a bag or £17 a ton. To have it delivered is £60 for 1- 6 tons. I am debating whether it makes sense to order 6 tons at once and have to delivered to my field and tarp it over until I use it - we could use a heck of a lot on the land and have a trailer to bring back smaller quantities to home for garden use. I am just trying to get a handle on what sort of volume that is.

Depends how dry it is.
I would work on the assumption is is one of those bulk builder's sacks full... Give or take.

If damp it will be about the same weight as soil, so probably a builders bag ish.

If dry, more...

We get a trailer load of between 500 - 600kg and that is 1 cubic metre. The heavier weight is when it is wetter but good compost will be in a shed, or buy after a dryish period.

The price you are quoting is cheap so I would have a look at it and see what it is like. May be good for organic bulk but not much else as it could be very high in unrotted wood fibre.

Zoe do you say those figures because you have weighed your trailer full of compost? or is it a guestimate?

Yes Compost Woman we drive the car with empty trailer attached onto a weighbridge and then have the trailer half filled (the trailer is 2mx1mx0.5m) and then drive the car back to the weigh bridge with the loaded trailer. The weighbridge has weighted the empty and then the loaded situation. Using a calculator the the mistress of the compost selling and making place then calculates how much compost is in the trailer. She then uses her calculator to calculate how much to charge.

Is this an acceptable procedure for us to determine the weight of what is in the trailer?

Your reply was enough clarification thank you Zoe.

I made a simple request for clarification of your post; , there is really no need for sarcasm.
