I'm a great fan of pressure cookers and used one extensively for nearly thirty years. A year ago my daughter decided to buy me a new one, made by the same manufacturer. It is slightly different in style, but has the same removable weight. The valve looks different, like a tiny silver castle turret which rises up when the pressure has been reached. The problem is that food is taking longer to cook than with the old cooker. I made soup at the weekend and timed it for ten minutes after it had come up to pressure, but the carrots still had a bit of 'give' to them (oh yes, al dente I mean!!). With my old pressure cooker ten minutes would have pulverised them into soup.

I wondered if anyone else had encountered this problem/situation.

Is there any possibilities that the cooking presures are different?

I believe they haven't always been the same, also on mine can be set it at 2 different pressures...

How does the weight work? Does it have a bit that rises up or is it one where the weight is made up of different weights or.... ?? bigthink

The weight looks similar to the old one, except I believe that it is only now made up of two sections instead of three. I have weighed both the old and new weight manually (i.e. one in each hand!!) and they feel the same. I think I may just have to persevere and give the cooker more time to work - but this won't drastically reduce cooking times as the old one did.
I have discovered the website of the company and have emailed them, so will report back.

Here's a blast from the past! And I'm happy to announce that over three years later I have solved the problem. I disocvered that the weight on the new pressure cooker needed to be pushed down until it clicked, whereas on the old one it just rested on top of the vent in the lid. After an extensive dialogue with the people in the Prestige customer service dept i still hadn't come up with the answer (but had replaced all the spare parts such as the seal around the lid more than once.) In the end it was a case of 'I wonder what would happen if...', and I worked it out. I think you were told NOT to push the weight down on the old one, but anyway - if you have had this problem with a new pressure cooker this might help! I've been making batches of soup right through the year, and all is well!
