What do you keep in your freezer (s)?

default What do you keep in your freezer (s)?

Post by Jaded Green on 8th April 2011, 2:01 pm

If you're Billy, it's a lifetime supply do meat, but how do the rest of you use your freezer?

Do you stock up with bargains and freeze some for later? Do you cook enough for two meals and freeze half for when you're busy?

Do you have lots of ingredients - frozen veg, fruit, meat, fish.

I've been thinking about how we use our freezer and it is not efficient.

I've often got stuff in there that has been there too long, wither gone past its best before date, or has been home frozen for too long and even I don't know how long, cos I didn't actually label

The only efficient drawer is the one full of vegan food (which we all eat).

Hmm.. let me think on this.

Well, we've got two freezers currently on line. A third deep freeze not in use, so NOT plugged in. It will be likely later the summer to freeze excess production for later use.

The secondary freezer currently has at least six meals from cook ahead batch cooking, and at least six meals of meats for future cooking. Some open space is filled with water for thermal mass to increase energy efficiency. That one's getting rather scant right now. In early spring, we're in what the old timers called the Hungry Gap, lol.

In the main freezer, as of today, it's:

8% frozen pizzas
5% ice for drinks
2% veggie burger patties
5% ice cream
15% frozen vegetables
10% frozen fruits
5% frozen burritos
15% freeze ahead meals, bulk
15% frozen meats
10% frozen meals, singles
15% frozen potatoe products
5% frozen confections, icing, etc

That's a pretty fair estimate.

We have 2 freezers, a chest & an upright for the 2 of us & they are usually full.

I buy large joints of meat & cut them up for use as whatever.

A bag of fish usually

Sausages, as I use them a lot

Chicken as it also very versatile.

bacon as I also use that a lot, see the 4 rashers of bacon thread!!

I also like to have as many precooked meals as I can, in case of accidents.

As much veg as we harvest, especially runner beans.

I also have a lot of veg cut up & ready to make soup.

Ingrediants for things like pizza

We only have a small freezer and at a guess it probably has the following in it:
Ice cream
Ice cubes
Sausages and mince
Frozen chips
Frozen pizza
Made up purees for LMC
And probably some breastmilk that really ought to be thrown out by now! Shocked

We have two chest freezers full of pork, an upright 6 foot freezer full of chickens, ducks, wild boar and other bulk kills and an under the counter freezer in the kitchen with day-to-day stuff - usually a couple of drawers of stocks, frozen veg, ice cream, intestines and so on.

2 six foot upright freezers full of home grown fruit and veg in store, some meat and fish, plus home made stuff ( stock, soups)

One half of a fridge freezer ( 7 foot) which has ready made stuff like bag of peas, pitta bread, plus the bags of each home grown fruit and veg bag in current use. And home made bread.

At the moment we are ok for space as we are eating our way through it all fast. Come August I will be chuntering for another freezer!

Although getting the dehydrator has taken the pressure off space a lot, as I now only freeze fruit and veg which we want to eat in a "fresh" state or use for chutney/ wine/jam ( time shifting by a few weeks or months until I get time to make the jam/chutne/ wine)

If it can be used from dehydrated, it gets dehydrated, using the free pv electric during the daytime summer months...

I have freed up at least half a freezer by dehydrating tomatoes, cougettes, beans, peppers etc.... only the stuff which we want to look as near to just picked in a didh getd frozen, IYKWIM...

If it doesn't matter too much, ( in a casserole, say) it gets dehydrated...

Has made a huge difference!

Our freezer is pretty small, and contains ice cream. Thats it. Three different flavours (chocolate, vanilla & phish food). I can't imagine putting anything else in there! Wink

We have two freezers - I defrost them every December (so they're done for Christmas and because the food keeps better outside in the cold while I'm defrosting them.) I make a list of anything which looks particularly old (i.e. has pre-decimal price on or mediaeval lettering) and plan to use it up quickly. There's usually a mixture of fruit/veg from the garden, meat and fish, ice cream and meals for Mr D and me which I've cooked and frozen. I do more cooking in the holidays and at the beginning of term, then at the end of term when we're both cream-crackered the tea is already cooked on most days! Mr D makes bread and rolls, I make cakes and we freeze those as well.

I've only a got a small freezer but at the moment it's full up with
home made soups, stock, raspberries & blackcurrants from the allotment, a chicken, bought frozen veg (sweetcorn, edamame), still some runner beans from last year, home made curry sauce, home made tomato sauce, soya mince, veggie sausages, real sausages, fish, paneer and, at the moment, there's 2 home made chocolate fudge cakes and a banana cake and 2 packs of crumpets. The ice box in the fridge is full of ice cubes

I also keep a couple of bought loaves in the freezer to use as and when I need and haven't got round to making a loaf

its just the beans though, not in pods like in Wagamama, but still tasty. Surprised your big health food shop doesn't have them as RealEat do them and check in Tesco as mine are Tesco own brand ones
