Competition!

default Competition!

Post by Hairyloon on 9th April 2011, 12:16 pm

I had an idea last night, it needs more thinking about before it goes live, so I thought I'd run it past you lot...

So, the plan is to run a competition for the best project proposal.
The prize is that we will try to make it happen.
The project can be anything, but viability is one of the parameters upon which it will be judged...

And at this point, we are looking for sponsorship, donations and suggestions.
Me? I got sod all, and I am putting up £1000 worth of time and energy towards it.
Hopefully that will inspire bigger organisations to contribute something.

At worst, I'll spend an interesting week working on a worthwhile project. At best, it will go wetsuit, and get a lot of interest.

And that is as far as the thought got... except to recognise that I need help on this one.

Firstly to work out how to run the competition: any legal technicalities, how
to judge it, stuff like that; and then help to get it out there and get
entries and contributions.

Although it is not yet live, I am accepting provisional entries: project ideas to help get the ball rolling.

Just off the top of my head, with no broad thinking about it, how about creating a very large wildlife pond somewhere there isn't one...

OK, there may be lots of problems but I guess to make it worthwhile its not supposed to be easy...

Give me a little while & I'm sure I could come up with a few reasons...

I would also think that there is enough knowledge here abouts to be able to run several ideas together & make a true "wildlife area/park" featuring various different habitats...

Good suggestion... but to be a valid entry, it would need to be a bit more specific: state the "somewhere" that you have in mind.

I propose my new field - needs substantial fencing; offers habitat/rescue for sheep, alpacas and dartmoor ponies that would otherwise be slaughtered, provides access to said wildlife to local schools, community etc.

Yes, I'm expecting quite a few entries along those lines. :?

But as I said, the competition is not live yet: first we need to decide some things like how it is to be judged, entry fees, etc...

I need a compost loo or tree bog building in the wood, so that more people can come and play?

To my mind, these entries lack ambition. :?

I have a project, but it would only be viable if I win the lottery.. I mean serious amounts with lots of zeros behind.

That actually came about little by little and it involves housing/community/reusing old buildings/life and professional skills.

ambitious enough, Hairy? where? ideally Devon.

another idea would be to arrange for the installation of solar hot water systems on council houses. This in order to hopefully reroute tax-payers' money to better uses.
this could be UK-wide.

I always figured that the only realistic way to win the lottery is to set up a project that it can support: part of the idea behind the competition.

Sounds promising, but as I've said, we need to work out how to run the competition first, otherwise it won't happen at all.
