No worms!?

default No worms!?

Post by Hairyloon on 18th July 2011, 9:57 am

I turned my compost bin over the other day and found that there were almost no worms in it... And in fact the garden overall seems to be rather lacking in them.
The obvious answer is to dump a load of manure on it, but I don't have a supply at the moment. Sad

Ask a friend might be a good idea.

Cheer up 'loon; you've got plenty of virtual friends on here ...

The obvious question about the compost heap is if it is a bit dry ? I find a good dollop of wet kitchen waste seems to attract them.

In the meantime, a few questions then:

Where is it located? In shade? Sun?

What's the general ratio of waste in there? How much green stuff/woody stuff/paper/card/grass clippings, etc.

How well rotted does it look & how long has it been in there?

Is it really wet, or just moist?

Have you thought of transplanting some worms from somewhere else into the bin?

If it has finished composting and is completed...the worms will go elsewhere...as they need an active, decaying heap to actually thrive and live.

Maybe...your compost is finished?

This week I managed to empty my compost bin & turn & airate it all. Re filled it in layers with paper etc & fresh prunings etc, removed 4 growbags of good compost as well all ready to use. Not a job I want to do again in a hurry but well worth it. Even the OH was suprised at the amount that came out, not as suprised as I was though,
