default feeding chickens and popcorn

Post by AngelinaJellyBeana on 24th August 2011, 9:24 am

I had a cupboard clear out yesterday and found an out of date bag of unpopped popcorn. I wondered if I could feed it to the chooks as it is or would it need soaking/popping first?

How much out of date?

Beginning of this year. It looks fine, I just don't want it, that's all

Just wondered (I occasionally have found things in my mother's kitchen which have pre-decimal price labels on!!)
The mixed corn I sometimes use for my chickens has maize in it, but it is bits of corn rather than the whole kernel - maybe they prefer it smaller? (Mine usually leave the maize anyway!!)

Isn't corn usually kibbled before feeding to hens?

It was the wholeness of it that I was concerned about as the bits of corn in the feed are chopped up a bit.

I will give them some and see how they get on....might be getting my own popcorn chicken:lol:

You should pop it first, they do love popcorn. This type of corn is different than the cracked corn in scratch and the corn on the cob.
