Re: More carving
Second version. This one is a little bigger (about 18cm long), and I went for a different style. I'm not sure which I like best yet ...

This one was trickier to carve with the undercut bits. I roughed out the inside first, whilst I still had a block to clamp down firmly so that I could send in with a gouge. The outside was mostly done with spokeshaves. I finished this one with Osmo hard wax oil; this usefully hardens up some of the more heavily spalted bit.

Re: More carving
I thought at first that I preferred the first one, but now I've looked again, I think that perhaps the photograph doesn't do this one justice. It looks like the sort of object that needs to be turned in the hand to appreciate its shape from all angles. Photos are good, but wood needs to be felt, and smelled. Bet your workshop smells LAAVELY!

Re: More carving
I kind of like the simpler form of the first one, and I prefer the lighter colour of the beeswax finish; the hard wax oil has darkened this one a bit more. But I know exactly what you mean, freebird, about turning it in your hands, the shape of number 2 is nice to fiddle with, and I am always fiddling with things. I took photos from a few angles, but my useless camera only produced one in focus - it won't focus closer than about a metre, and the close up mode seems even worse !
My workshop at the moment smells strongly of beeswax and natural turpentine oil from the wax polish - which Mrs C-H hates but fortunately I quite like ...
