Fuel crisis? What fuel crisis?

default Fuel crisis? What fuel crisis?

Post by Dandelion on 29th March 2012, 3:07 pm

As the UK waits for the fuel tanker drivers to decide whether to strike or not, the government tells us we should only be panicking a little bit by keeping our petrol tanks topped up. Being in a rural area where for some there is no alternative to the car this means that some petrol stations are already running out of fuel because of the extra demand over the last day or two. Driving through Hereford this morning there were queues outside all the petrol stations which were in turn blocking main roads. It occurred to me that if there is a strike, then not only private motorists would be affected but also delivery lorries. How long will it take the government to move civil unrest along a little further by saying '..and by the way, while you're out topping up your petrol tank you might buy up some extra food because THERE WON'T BE ANY if the tanker drivers take industrial action.'

Feel the same D. We keep ours topped all the time, with all the hospital appointments etc & being ready for those dreaded trips to AE. As for food, like a lot of people I have a store cupboard which would keep us going for a while., but buying extra food does not enter my mind as such.

You know, all this fuss and I had to search to find out exactly what the fuel hauliers are unhappy about. Poor PR from them not to set out their case better.

I think they play a dangerous game. I see a lot of tractor drivers through my work, and a high proportion are Eastern Europeans. I suspect that they could drive tankers too, and probably soon will be doing.

I would say it is the Government's brinksmanship that is playing a dangerous game. Certainly dangerous for that woman who immolated herself decanting petrol in her kitchen. And considering the fuel hauliers have stated they will not Strike before Easter, and indeed negotiations don't even start until Monday this is sheer folly on the govt's part.

A convenient distraction from Gideons budget for the 1% though...

Our Federal austerity budget was unveiled this week and provincial gas prices went up 3c a liter, thats 30c since the New Year and it is really starting to bite. Not looking forward to the Provincial budget .
