default Sprouting Seeds

Post by polgara on 29th March 2012, 3:35 pm

Just put a selection of seeds to soak, a jar of mixed ones for OH .

Some more mung beans & some mustard & cress. Window ledge quite crowded as I am still waiting for the parsnips to sprout.

Funnily enough I was thinking about sprouting some parsnips to pre-germinate them before sowing them outside. Is this what you're doing or are you sprouting them to eat as ..er... sprouts? I was only asking because I'm not sure what to do with them after I've sprouted them as I know they don't like being planted in modules.

I do it mainly cos they are old seed, & they are harder to germinate. When they have little white tails, I plant them in the pot & then forget them till after the frost, except for the odd water when it is very dry. At l;east this way you do not end up with an empty pot.

So it would probably work to do the same only put them in a raised bed when they've sprouted?

I would think so, but never grown them in the garden as such, only in pots.

I'll report back and tell you how it works! (I may sprout some, and put some directly in the soil. With the weather we've had the soil should be warm enough for them.)

Geoff Hamilton used to put the pre-germinated seeds in a jar of wallpaper paste, them pipe them like icing down the seed drill. The difficulty is getting fungicide free wallpaper paste; perhaps a flour/water paste might work ?

You know, I have always sowed parsnips (usually "tender and true", nothing fancy) direct, and have had few problems. Then again, we only need a few parsnips as they are not especially a family favourite.

Oh yes, & first lot of beansprouts looking good, I hope they are ready for Saturday as we have got the bits to do a Sweet & sour Pork. I think 6oz of seeds is going to do rather a lot... Very Happy

Hmmmm, 2lb 7oz nice bean sprouts, Shocked now looking for how to use them:

Cheese & beansprout sandwiches
Egg & beansprout sandwiches
Sweet & Sour pork with beansprouts.

I drew the line at Hot X buns with beansprouts.

More seeds sprouting, including of course mung beans. Have a frozen sweet & sour in the freezer so they will go nicely together.

Put some peas, broad beans & dwarf beans to sprout, also some carrots. I must say I find it better to sprout & then plant, seem to get more crops.
