default Making tools to make tools to make ..?

Post by Chilli-head on 12th November 2012, 10:02 am

I managed to find a bit of playtime at the weekend to have some fun.

I started with a tool I made earlier in the week:

It is a piece of 1"x1" steel bar, with a couple of 6mm (don't you love steel stock sizes) pins drilled, tapped and screwed into it. This will be my bending jig - putting a bit of hot tool steel between the pegs and tapping it around one peg allows me to form a hook which, with a bit of grinding, looks like this:

After hardening and tempering, and fitting into a handle I turned earlier, I have a hook turning tool for hollowing on the pole lathe:

Of course, now I had to do a test run. It was starting to get dark outside, so I set the lathe up with the bungee indoors. Not as nice as working in the open air, but it does make it easier to get something done at this time of year. With a bit more of the cherry wood, my first go at a goblet:

Just crossing my fingers and hoping it dries out without cracking. If it does, I plan to seal the inside with beeswax; I think I'll be ready for a drink then beer
