default What have I done in the Studio today - Freebird

Well, not exactly IN the studio - not even the first drawings. I had to wait in for five separate deliveries one day last week, so brought my portable drawing board into the living room, and worked in a nice, log-burner-warmed room. And today I had no option but to work outside. Fingers and toes still numb from the cold.

But here is some work in progress. The back of the man's boat, nearly complete. The lettering needs finishing and touching up to clean up the edges. I had to use thick enough paint to cover in one coat, but it doesn't allow for finer detail. I still have the two sides to complete, although the lettering is traced down.

The name Gruffalina, is because he is known as Gruffalo to his fishing mates (Gruff for short), but the boat has to be female of course. And she is Gruffalina Too, as his previous boat was Gruffalina.

That must be incredibly tricky to do, having to work on a horizontal surface. How do you stop your arm from wobbling?

Take a bad photograph! There are a lot more wobbles than the photo shows - that's why it needs touching up, with thinner paint and a thinner brush. But that's just professional pride. It looks just fine at any reasonable distance, and the man, bless him, thinks it's perfect.

Oh Lordy, Lordy! I took on a biggish commission last month, having been told it was required for mid-June. I have just had a communication from the customer telling me that it is to be presented, framed (and they need enough time to organise the framing), at a dinner on 4th May. So realistically, I need to have it finished on Monday.

A substantial chunk of calligraphy, with painted and gilded coat of arms, and two military badges, and decorative border around the whole. I've just spent two hours in the studio working on the writing and ruling up the paper for the final piece. Writing always comes first, as it is more likely that a mistake will be made in the writing than in anything else. No point spending hours painting and gilding and then messing up on the writing.

Ah well, see you when I surface .....

It's finished, and so am I! What an exhausting four and a half days. I'll post some pics when I have taken some.

Coo, very nice. I'm sure that if I were to try something like that, in concentrating on making it look pretty I'd go and spell something wrong ...

Been updating the church book again - had to get out into the studio early before the sun gets round, otherwise it is way too hot to work in. As it was, my glasses were sliding down the sweat on my nose as I was writing the last two entries.

And today, updating a 'Head Girls and Boys' board for a local(ish) school. A once yearly task that I've been doing for the last 16 years - only three to go and they will need a new board.

I've always wondered how the names got added to those boards!
