Sahak and his wife are engaged in land cultivation. In their own greenhouse, they plant various kinds of vegetables, such as tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers, and sell them in the Ararat region markets. The revenue they use to sustain their large family.

Sahak has four children: two sons and two daughters. His mother, who is retiree, also lives with them. Sahak is 35 years old and lives with his family in one of the villages of Ararat region.

More than five years ago, Sahak used to work as a builder. But, since 2010, he runs his own family agricultural business. He is satisfied with this activity and hopes to enlarge it in the future. Land cultivation is a hard business, but at the same time, more profitable. Sahak and his wife do their best to build a good future for their children.

Sahak asks from Kiva lenders a USD 2,500 loan which will help him to repair their greenhouse in order to be able to plant the vegetables at the appropriate time.

Mariam is 20 years old and from the small village of Telavi district, East Georgia. She is married and lives with her husband, infant child, parents-in-law, and daughter-in-law. Mariam requested a loan from local financial institutions several times for the family's business start-up, but without any success. Her loan request was rejected each time, because of low income and the family’s poor living conditions.

The only source of income for the family is the small monthly income of Mariam’s husband, working as a hired worker in a local wine factory. Mariam’s mother-in-law is working in the same wine factory as a laboratory assistant. It is hardly enough for food for the family. According to Credo's estimations, the family belongs to the subsistence poor category.

Mariam requested a loan from Credo to start up a family business, which was stopped because of natural calamity in the Kakheti region. Her loan request was approved under a new joint initiative of Kiva and Credo. Start-up loan program envisage provision of business start-up and re-startup credits with conditions suited to country rural poor, who do not have access to credit products, being regarded as “high risk borrowers” because of low income. With the received credit, Mariam will start a grocery store. She will roof the grocery store, which was damaged, and will buy grocery stock. Mariam is experienced in this business, as she has a grocery store, and she thinks that it will be profitable. The profit will be reinvested in the business, and she will be able to make a better future for her infant child. The new business initiative, financed with the Kiva start-up loan will significantly improve the living conditions of the family.

Zaur is a 31-year-old IDP, who lives in the Bilasuvar IDP Settlement with his wife and three children. He is a farmer and has raised seasonal fruits and vegetables for the last 5 years. He chose this business because it is profitable and fresh crops are in high demand. People use fresh vegetables every day and consider them healthy. Many national dishes are made of vegetables, like pilau and dolma. Fresh fruits are served on every table in Azerbaijan and they are also use to make fresh punch.

Zaur sells his crops in the bazaar. His monthly income is 150 AZN. His wife actively helps him to raise the crops.
These products are in high demand and Zaur wants to expand his business and produce more fruits and vegetables to cover this market demand. For this purpose he has applied for 2000 AZN. He will buy seeds and fertilizers. This will be his 2nd loan and he has a positive loan history.

Talaave is 30 years old and married with 2 children. She runs a small business selling pancakes in her community and has been doing this for 2 years. Talaave has requested a loan to buy ingredients for her business. She joined SPBD in 2010 to gain access to funds. With her earnings, Talaave will improve her business.

The richer we have become materially, the poorer we have become morally and spiritually. We have learned to fly in the air like birds and swim in the sea like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living together as brothers and sisters.

Its always a struggle, I often feel overwhelmed with the sheer numbers of people who need the help and wish I could do more with our money, so I try to spread it evenly
