default Growing furniture

I saw with on another forum, but thought it was interesting and worth sharing here.  Although I'm not sure if it belongs in Growing spaces or Heritage crafts !  Stools and other furniture "grown" by training and grafting into the right shape:

I rather like the idea.  Selecting bits of wood already the right shape is common in spoon carving, boat building, and in the chairmaking of people like Gudrun Leitz.  Some walking stick makers and Japanese adze makers train trees into the curve needed, but this takes the idea to a whole new level.

Impractically expensive and time consuming for mainstream use, but they would look great in one of those Earthship hobbit houses !

Interesting concept, CH. But I can forsee, if the idea took off, a whole other industry of making the frames and supports to train the trees in the first place; which would somewhat offset the gains made over traditional furniture production.

In the Guardian article it is referred to as 'mass production meets delayed gratification', which could also be used as a description of your own handmade furniture. In terms of ecological soundness, I'm inclined to think (without doing any serious research) that what you do is probably more ecologically sound than the growing method.
