default What happened to the garden in August ?

Post by Chilli-head on 16th August 2017, 1:38 pm

Goodness, half of August is gone and I realise I was away at the begining so there was no new garden thread.  Mind you, I guess what happened is mostly harvesting, which has its own thread.

One of the things I'm thinking about for our garden is some redesign.  Since we finally conceded that I couldn't keep the inappropriate Atlas cedar in the middle of our lawn under control any longer and removed it, we feel that the garden is a but dull.  The stump is gone, and the grass had almost filled in where it once was, but now there is a lot of grass, which frankly seems a bit of a waste of space, and the remaining larger stuff is all around the edges giving a bit of the "centrifuge" effect.  The front garden is also a bit bare, having been stripped of the ugly conifers and diseased shrubs.  A bit of a blank canvas.  Anyone good with garden design ?  I wish I was.

Not good with design but how about an apple tree in the middle of the lawn?

Seriously though, maybe start with thinking about what you want from your garden in the coming years. As CH Jnr is going through his teenage years, I would guess that maybe the garden doesn't fulfill the same function for him now as when he was younger.

I would love to get rid of most of my couch-infested weed patch lawn, but really we need a space big enough to dry our awning, so the lawn stays.

You might find that once you have worked through the practical considerations, and taken into acount future needs and wants, a design may fall into place.

Failing that, maybe offer it as a project to a trainee garden designer.
