Bad press for woodburners

default Bad press for woodburners

In the BBC news today, London mayor seeks curbs on wood burners.

Bit odd really.

Mr Khan wants to introduce a network of "zero-emission zones" where the burning of wood or coal is completely prohibited.

He also wants tougher controls on the sale of wood-burning stoves.

Under the mayor's proposals only low-emission versions of wood-burning stoves would be allowed to remain on the market.

But as the BBC article points out later:

But under the The Clean Air Act local councils can already set up Smoke Control Areas where only smokeless fuels should be burnt, or wood is burnt only in "exempt appliances".

Homeowners can be fined £1,000, although there is no evidence anyone in London has been.

So perhaps councils need to do a better job enforcing existing law, rather than spending time creating new ones ?

I'm sure it must be a problem.  Out here, in a Bedfordshire small town, the only way I can get a good, clean burning fire is to season my own wood, with the effort and space that calls for.  I imagine that in a city, good dry firewood is even harder to come by.

I lit up my stove last night. Some lovely dry ash from FIL's garden, sawn and split by hand, burned very nicely Very Happy

When we installed our wood burner/multi-fuel stove, we made sure we bought a model suitable for our smokeless zone. I doubt many people have gone to that expense.
