Armchair gardening in December

default Armchair gardening in December

That's mostly what I have planned - planning and seed ordering.

I've been trying to reflect on what we actually eat, and what we have to buy a lot of.  It is always tempting to experiment with new and obscure crops (no ? well it is for me !), but I often find that they are useful for only a dish or two.  Whereas we always need to buy carrots, brassica, often peas, usually at least a few bags of onions, fruit, ...

Some of these things it is just that I need to grow more, some it needs more thought on varieties to have nearer to a whole year supply - onions, brassica particularly.

Other jobs for winter are fixing the allotment fence to keep out the muntjac, and fitting a gutter to the shed to fill the water butt - the allotment society are kicking up a fuss about water use, I agree in principle but do suspect some personal vendettas are involved too.

I am still actually gardening. Moved my fruit bushes into the fruit cage, now they are dormant, and moved rhubarb crowns to a new spot that is not in the rain shadow of next-door's 60 foot conifers. While I am at it, rearranging the autumn raspberries that have started to relocate and wander away from their original bed.

All the new planting is being mulched with garden compost (nothing but soil in the actual planting hole), then covered with cardboard for weed suppression, and then another mulch of the weed-free stable manure on top.
