Hen house problem

default Hen house problem

Post by MrsNesbitt on 29th January 2010, 11:06 pm

Our henhouse's base is made from 2 thick layers of wood/chipboard.
The perch fell off today, I didn't know until I shut the door.
When I shone the torch in the hens seemed happy enough, cuddling together on the layer of wood shavings (which I clean every day) is there an urgent need to replace the perch or are they OK for a while?

I does seem there natural thing to do - perch. Its warmer off the ground and they are away from their droppings and mites. We just use hazel sticks so they can be replaced at no cost frequently.

They aren't going to suffer greatly for a few days until you get it fixed though.

How about puting a small branch in until you have it fixed,
or a wooden box so they can perch un the sides??

Some of ours choose to sit on the floor, even though they are well up the pecking order....one always sits in the doorway, even if she is the only one in there....

As Billy says, I don't think it will hurt for a couple of days tbh...

When you do replace the perch, make sure it's square or rectnagular as opposed to round. The chickens will prefer a square perch, it's easier for them to balance on !
