default Compost and Legionnaire’s Disease

Post by Compostwoman on 12th March 2010, 3:05 pm

I just got this through from the Community Composting Network.

Compost and Legionnaire’s Disease

You may have seen some of the recent media coverage discussing a new report which has found a link between potting compost and three cases of Legionnaire’s disease in Scotland. In one case the individual in question died and in the other two cases both individuals required prolonged hospitalisation.

While tragic, a quick read of the original paper helps to put the story into some perspective – two of the individuals had pre-existing high risk factors such as smoking and underling medical conditions for developing Legionnaires. The cases have been linked to two compost brands and in all three cases the potting mixtures were a mixture of compost and peat. Both compost brands were PAS100.

At the minute we would suggest that this is mainly a risk factor for doctors to be aware of to aid correct diagnosis. CCN will keep you updated on the mater and hope to issue some guidance in the future. As always common sense is urged.

If you would like to read the original paper (pdf) please click here.

The pathogen in question is Legionella longbeachae

I have a friend who's mother died of tetanus. She quizzed the doctor of it origin as she was an old lady that had no actual garden. The doctor said that it was common in cow manure in that region which is the main manure element used in potting compost.

So all because its in a plastic bag doesn't mean its clean and safe to be used without due consideration!
