What pump for rainwater harvesting?

default What pump for rainwater harvesting?

Like it says in the title.
It is easy enough to find a suitable container and plonk it under the down pipe, but obviously the water needs to be pumped back up to where it is needed.
Anyone got any recommendations what pump to use? Does it matter much?

When doing the calculations for greywater recycling the power consumption of the pump has to not increase the carbon loading by more than IIRC 0.7kg or the overall ecological impact becomes negative rather than positive (using CfSH methodology, at least).
I would guess the same applies to rainwater harvesting.
A lot of people I have seen have the rainwater tank mounted atop the garage roof or similarly at first floor or higher level, and use it to feed ground floor appliances just with gravity.

Is that difficult to achieve?
I suppose some kind of turbine in the outgoing pipe to help drive the pump for the incoming water would be a recipe for disaster.
