Where do I start?!
Where do I start?!
We're in the process of deciding if we're staying put or selling this house, I think we should stay as there's no mortage which is a huge bonus BUT I have a small northish facing garden 'bout 35ft x 30ft (bit odd triangle shape though) Anyhooo.... It's currently just grass with a shed & compost bin in the corner.
I've been ummming and ahhhhhing about what to do with it, now DS is older he doesn't play so much in the garden, prefering to be out the front with his lil' buddies. I really want to grow veg! But I dunno where to start
Should I just turn the whole lot in to a veg plot or do round the edges and keep a tiny bit of grass? Or should I get a green house? or, or, or!!
I can't have chooks - tis in the deeds I think.....Hmmm I must check tonight, just in case!
So my green fingered friends, what would you do with my garden?!
A x

Billy you're not far off the mark! DS would have us turn it into a mini MotoX track in the blink of an eye. If he had his way we'd have whoops and tabletops already

Re: Where do I start?!

Hun I think first you have to be 100% certain you're not gonna be moving in the next year..... If not, then I think I'd do a basic outline of the garden and where the sun is, and isn't! What you want to keep or not (ie shed, play stuff, barbeque etc) I personally regret leaving a large space of lawn for the kids, they all ended up playing on the green

What is your soil like? What are the coniditons? Do you have frost pockets? What do you fancy eating? I'd plan before I even looked outside, but that's the sensible bit of me, the mad side, is, as we speak, digging dn hurling and planning it as I go.....

But if you were a client, we'd be drawing shapes and planning... at the pub....

Akuma I would say the same as the others have said.
Could you if you stay where you are find out about allotments? and if you could get hold of one you well may be able to have some chickens on there??
You could always grow upwards Could you not???
or rased beds. There are so many ways of growing things and to grow thing in.
Best of all have fun doing it.

Lottieeeeeee I wanna be your client so we can go to the pub!!!
Lord know's what the garden plan would end up looking like though
Thanks for the advice though folks.....I really will sit down with hubs and thrash out a decision cos I don't want to turn the garden over and then try and sell the place!
Hmmm I'll be back and let you know what we decide!

Re: Where do I start?!
Decision was made this very morning
We're staying here
2 main reasons (A) No Mortgage and (B) DS is very settled here with at least 4 good friends inthe same cul de sac. As he's an only child it seems heartless to move him at the moment, I know he'd benefit from living in a more rural environment but he'd have a very limited social life and that seems a bit selfish of us as parents.
We can grow veg, install a solid fuel stove....maybe even an aga, put up solar hot water, rainwater harvest etc without moving. It is a modern house (2004) with a small garden but making it more green will be part of the fun..... did I say that convincingly enough?! :suspect:
Soooo bring on the garden plans! Oooh and apparently I can have a green house for my birthday in March! Woooo Hooooo!

P.s Lottie - I would LOVE to go to the pub with you! Name the place and I'll come and see ya

installing a solid fuel stove and/or Aga is very unlikely to make a 2004 house more green, I'm afraid.

Hows the planning going?
If the garden is north facing a wall/fence at the end will be south facing. Great place for growing all sorts.
How much shadow does the house give?
If you dig out from the back wall in say 1.5 bands, you can keep increasing the garden as you get more enthusiastic!
