Which weeds do you battle with?

default Which weeds do you battle with?

Post by Dandelion on 3rd May 2010, 9:26 pm

I have two weeds which cause more work than all the others. One is Enchanters Nightshade (Circaea lutetiana) - one of those weeds which has thick white roots which break off and grow again. It's doing very well after a couple of wet years (hot dry summers seem to hold it back). The other weed which is quite annoying is (according to a website I looked up) quite unusual for a garden weed. It's Wood Avens or Herb Bennet Geum urbanum), a distant relative of the wild strawberry (which also grows wild in the garden). It is incredibly tough and difficult to dig up (especially on our clay concrete soil) and caused me to damage my back when I was trying to dig a clump up two years ago. I suppose it's got personal!
We have the usual dandelions and annual weeds, but these two are a real pain.

Wood Avens is a real problem here as well, also on 100 ft plus of clay so not surprising , really!

Goutweed (Aegopodium podagraria) is a major enemy here.

You may know it as Ground Elder, it spreads over large areas of ground by underground rhizomes. It is extremely invasive, and crowds out native species. The smallest piece of rhizome left in the ground will quickly form a sturdy new plant, followed by many more.

I will take some photos of our goutweed problem and post them up.

Oh yes. This is a problem I share with you. You cannot dig it out without a JCB. It is unmoved by hoeing, and is largely unsuceptible to all the herbicides available to the amateur. On raliway tracks the switch to using glyphosate has actually allowed it to spread by clearing space for it !

The only organic solution to Equisetum arvense is, as the late Geoff Hamilton would say, to move house. The only saving graces are that having little leaf area it is not terribly competitive, and that its deep roots bring up nutrients.

Bindweed! Horrid and so deep. It goes nuts when it gets through to the compost / manure layer in spring...I see it when I shut my eyes at the moment!

I forgot to mention the buttercups - they can spread faster than I can dig them up, and I think they upset the guinea pigs tummies

Introduced (here) by the Romans as a vegetable. Cook like spinach.

Bindweed is the only thing I take great issue with.
